Herrin hires first full-time female firefighter

021507_ind_fire.jpgHERRIN — Thedra Ladd, 32, has been hired as Herrin’s first full-time female firefighter.
Ladd, who has been a paid on-call firefighter with the department for about 10 months, said she looked forward to the work and was surprised with all the attention she has gotten.
“I just want to be treated like the rest of the guys,” Ladd said before taking her oath from City Clerk Marlene Simpson. “I don’t want to be treated differently.”
For the whole story, plus information about a Homeland Security grant received last week by the fire department, check out this week’s issue of The Independent, available Thursday, Feb. 15.
